Q: What is Sterling Silver?

A Silver is the whitest of all jewelry metals. Silver is too soft to use for jewelry in its pure state, so it is usually found as Sterling Silver, an alloy of 92.5% silver and 7.5% other metals, usually copper. Items marked with "925" are sterling silver. Sterling silver will tarnish, of course, but when manufactured as highly polished, sterling silver will need little if any polishing when worn as jewelry.

Q: What is Yellow or Rose Gold Plating?

A: It is when one metal type is overlaid with another metal type usually to change the color of the metal. Sterling Silver is often plated (overlaid) with 14K or 18K Yellow or Rose Gold. It is not recommended to wear this type of jewelry in the shower or while swimming or for it to come in direct contact with any perfumes or sprays. Plating typically lasts about 6 months depending on how well the item has been taken care of and can be “re-plated” at any time.

Q: How should I care for my Sterling Silver jewelry?

A: All sterling silver will tarnish over time, but it will happen much faster when it comes into contact with agents such as perfume, salty air, sulphur, skin creams/lotions, hairspray and acidic skin ph. The amount of tarnishing that occurs will depend on your skin and the care habits of the wearer. Tarnishing is therefore not a manufacturing fault.

Q: How should I store my Sterling Silver jewelry?

A: Jewelry should be stored away from natural sunlight and heat, in a protective(lined) jewelry box or a tarnish-resistance pouch. It can also be stored in a plastic zip lock bag made of Mylar or polyethylene. Never use polyvinyl plastic bags, such a bin liners as they contain sulphur compounds, which can make sterling silver tarnish faster. Do not store your jewelry in the bathroom.
